Kevin McCasky: Leadership vs. Management

During his keynote speech at the IB Annual Conference a few years ago, Richard Gerver stated that he always tries to hire people who don’t need to be managed. The fact that so much energy can be conserved as a result of not having to do the three things listed above means that it can be converted into the energy of inspiration, which I see as:

(1) inspiring people to push their own boundaries

(2) inspiring people to challenge norms

(3) inspiring people to reimagine what their jobs are in the first place

Kevin McCasky – Encouraging Economic Growth for a Better Future

As Jefferson County Commissioner, Kevin McCasky made it his goal to create a positive future for the people of the County by encouraging economic growth. It is the hope of every citizen that the political elite and policy makers will do enough to revive economic situations. It’s not all doom and gloom, but policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs could do well to keep the following in mind when it comes to taking local economies forward.

  • Economic growth is fueled by innovation. Innovation and start-ups bring in irresistible drive and creativity to the economy. They ensure that hardworking citizens get value for their ingenuity and persistence. Policies that promote innovation are necessary for economic growth to bring positive results.

  • Create jobs for the unemployed. One way the unemployed can help an economy is by volunteering. In this way, they get to contribute to the growth of the economy, gain useful life skills, create social and professional networks, and gain references that may lead to a good job.
  • Reducing health care costs will improve the economic situation. A lot of money is channeled to healthcare, and perhaps rightfully so. However, the focus should also be on keeping a healthy workforce, something that can be done by paying fair wages and providing necessary benefits.
  • implement relevant policies. Laws are made to bring clarity in various sectors of the economy, and if they are not precise, they stand to impede economic growth by slowing business operations. Such laws should be eliminated, and replaced by laws that promote international trade and connectivity.
